Razavi Khorasan Province

Razavi Khorasan Province is a vast and culturally diverse region in northeastern Iran, shaped by the long history of Khorasan and the meeting of cities, mountains, plains, deserts, agricultural landscapes, religious sites, and historic settlements. Mashhad, the provincial capital, is one of Iran’s major cultural and religious centers, while cities such as Nishapur, Torbat-e Heydarieh, Sabzevar, and other towns and rural areas preserve different layers of the region’s history, culture, architecture, and everyday life. The province contains a remarkable range of landscapes, from the mountains and valleys of the Binalud and Hezar Masjed ranges to open plains, semi-arid environments, agricultural lands, orchards, and rural settlements. Its cultural heritage includes historic cities and archaeological sites, traditional architecture, caravan routes, bazaars, mosques, mausoleums, gardens, qanats, and other structures connected to the historical development of Khorasan. Nishapur, known for its long literary and cultural history and its turquoise mines, is among the region’s notable historic centers, while Mashhad has developed around the shrine of Imam Reza and remains a major destination for religious and cultural travel. This documentary photography collection explores Razavi Khorasan through its landscapes, heritage, architecture, communities, and everyday environments. Rather than presenting the province only through its most famous landmarks, the collection records the diversity of contemporary life across northeastern Iran, from historic urban spaces and rural settlements to mountains, agricultural areas, traditional crafts, pilgrimage landscapes, and changing relationships between people and their environment. The photographs form part of a visual archive of contemporary Iran, documenting the distinctive geography, cultural heritage, social life, and changing landscapes of Razavi Khorasan.
