An aerial drone shot features the abandoned recreational ship Artemis, red-roofed and white-sided, resting on the light brown, cracked dry bed of Lake Urmia. White winding streaks of residual water surround the vessel, stretching across the vast, flat landscape under a partly cloudy sky. Photograph by Mohammad Ataei.

An aerial photograph reveals the recreational ship Artemis stranded on the parched bed of Lake Urmia, Iran, where residual water paths from recent rainfall create a poignant, almost monstrous pattern around the vessel, symbolizing the profound impact of the region's severe drought.

CURATORIAL INTRODUCTION

A documentary photography archive exploring Iran’s diverse environments and the changing relationship between people, nature, and the land. The collection documents forests, wetlands, lakes, rivers, deserts, coastlines, mountains, agricultural landscapes, and other natural environments alongside the human activities and environmental pressures that shape them. From the Hyrcanian forests and the wetlands of northern Iran to drought-stricken landscapes, disappearing water bodies, industrial areas, and fragile coastal ecosystems, these photographs examine both the beauty and vulnerability of Iran’s natural heritage. Rather than presenting nature solely as scenery, the collection approaches the environment as a living and changing system, documenting ecological transformation, water scarcity, drought, habitat loss, human impact, and the continuing interaction between communities and their surroundings. Through a long-term documentary perspective, the archive contributes to a visual record of Iran’s environmental landscapes and the challenges facing them.
