PHILOSOPHY
Why Photography?
I believe photography is more than the act of making an image. It is a way of observing, questioning, and preserving what is often overlooked. My practice moves between documentary and fine-art photography, exploring people, places, nature, memory, and the traces of change. I photograph not only what is present, but what its presence tells us about the world we are leaving behind.
Look beyond the obvious.
I approach photography through observation rather than simply searching for a picture. I look for the quiet details, contradictions, and moments that reveal something deeper about a place, a person, or a changing landscape.
Preserve what time changes.
Photography, for me, is also an act of witnessing. I document landscapes, communities, heritage, and traces of human presence as a visual record of places and stories that may not remain unchanged.
Make images that remain open.
I do not want every photograph to provide an immediate answer. I want the image to create a question, invite reflection, and allow the viewer to discover their own relationship with what they see.
THE NARRATIVE
Mohammad Ataei Mohammadi is an Iranian documentary photographer whose work focuses on people, nature, heritage, and the changing landscapes of Iran. Through long-term observation and fieldwork, he explores the relationship between communities and their environment, documenting stories shaped by culture, memory, environmental change, and everyday life.
For more than two decades, Ataei has worked as an independent photographer and photography instructor. His documentary practice has taken him into rural communities, natural landscapes, and culturally significant places across Iran, where he seeks to record both visible realities and the stories behind them. Alongside his photographic practice, he has dedicated much of his professional life to photography education and mentoring the next generation of photographers.
