Oasis of Heritage

Mehriz, Yazd Province, Iran

CURATORIAL INTRODUCTION

A documentary photographic collection from Mehriz, a historic city in Yazd Province, central Iran, known for its gardens, qanats, traditional architecture, historic settlements, and desert landscapes. The collection explores the cultural and architectural heritage of Mehriz through places such as Pahlavanpur Garden, a UNESCO-listed Persian Garden shaped by qanat water and traditional Persian garden design; Mehrpadin Castle and the historic Mehrpadin quarter; the ancient village and fortress of Saryazd; and the historic Zein-o-din Caravanserai on the former caravan routes south of Yazd. The photographs also document traditional houses, water structures, earthen architecture, historic mosques, castles, and the relationship between cultivated gardens and the surrounding arid landscape. Through a documentary perspective, this collection presents Mehriz as a living cultural landscape where Persian architectural heritage, water, gardens, desert nature, and contemporary life continue to coexist.
